They got about four of them last month and had a blowout price of $2K. I wasn't about to pass that up because I was about to shell out $500 to tweak an Engelahrdt ES-1, which really didn't thrill me.
I got to try out an SB-150 at a local shop and liked the sound better then my ES-1. Thankfully, my instructor wanted a backup bass and so we worked a deal for the Engelhardt and I ordered the Shen.
Initial impressions (and this is with the bridge not fully placed yet) - the D & G strings are quite robust and I like the overall warmth. I'm sure it will develop a bit more as it opens up. But for the moment, I'm glad I got I got it because I felt like I was fighting the Engelhardt.

The current version of the SB 180 has an oil varnish finish.

I'm still pretty new at double bass and the Shen is a step up from what I had, regardless of finish. Quote:

I'm having a local luthier double check my placement solely for piece of mind.

The upgrade oil varnish and a few other refinements in specs would bring the cost up several hundred dollars for a current example. Congrats!
