New bass joy.... To despair in 2 minutes!!!

Well, after a few years of only playing electric bass, I decided to buy another double bass as I simply LOVE the sound.

So, I bought a used one on Monday, played really easily and sounded deliciously full and warm. I took it out of the guy's house in it's padded gig bag, leaned it against my car while I got the key out of my pocket to open the remote locking.

Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. The bass slid sideways along the car and the headstock smacked into the kerb! I opened the gig bag to see the strings flopping against the fingerboard and the headstock snapped completely off! Aaaaaagh!!!!

So, I had the bass a total of 2 minutes after buying it, and it's in pieces! I had to take it to my local luthier the next day to leave it for repair.

Oh well, I guess it's not too bad as I'll get it set up to my own preference as part of the repair work.

I am a numpty!!!!!

I feel your pain! I had my bass on a wheeled cart in the back of my van on a particularly windy day a couple of years back. I was unlocking the van and it was indeed like slow motion as the wind caught the bass and proceeded to slam it to the pavement, neatly popping the peghead off.
I was loading out after a Church Musical that paid $225. The repair was $400. I told my wife I made -$175 to play a Church Musical. D'Oh!

Always put the bass on the ground cuz if you don't it will sometimes wind up there anyway and cost you money.

My own story is that I had my bass in it's gig bag and in a upright bass stand and it was fine for about 16 hours and then out of the blue it fell and the fingerboard came clean off. Suffice it to say, I don't do that anymore.

I feel your pain, I set a bass sideways on the ground and the wind blew and knocked it over. I didn't pull it out of the bag until I got to my gig and realized the back had popped off and the sound post had dropped to the bottom. The best man in the wedding I was playing went and got me his dad's vintage telecaster bass, I guess that wasn't too bad the tele bass had the same size neck

I should get the bass back in a couple of weeks or so. Not too long to wait.

Ouch. I feel your pain. When I first started, I left my double bass leaning on a bench on a ferry & the wind blew if off. Went to orchestra practice with the bass in 2 pieces. Fortunately, the conductor help repair it & I'm still playing it today. Lesson, never leave the double bass untended for any reason when your outside, & never lean it against anything. Safest place is always lying on the floor with you nearby to whack anyone the head who dares to try to walk/sit on it. Seriously, someone tried to & only backed off when I gave him the evil eye.

Part of learning DB is learning how to live with one. Sorry to hear about the fall. In truth it could have been much worse.

Yup, it could have been FAR worse. Saying that, it still is frustrating not even getting to play my newly purchased bass before it needed repairing! hahaha

Ih well, at least it's getting repaired and set up to my own preference in one fell swoop. It should be cool whenever I collect it.

Nah, just a lesson in patience (well, that and remembering to lie my bass on it's side!). Hahaha

So, like Jason said, sorry for the pain but it really could have been a lot worse. And you'll never forget your baby sliding to her (fairly minor) demise -- your awareness level of her unique frailty and instability is gonna be there from here on in.

Well, I just got a call to say my double bass is now repaired and set up to my liking. Hopefully I'll be able to pick it up later today, it all depends on the rain staying away. Don't Waveney open the convertible roof in a downpour to let me get the bass inside! Hahaha
