New DB in the future?

So, my wife has this crazy job that has allowed us to clear the mortgage, credit debt and college costs for the youngsters. We have our pet charities that love us because we were both raised to believe that giving back is a good thing. She handed me an envelope yesterday and told me that she decided I deserved a "bonus" this year too...taking care of the kids and dogs and homestead while she travels about for work.

Long story, even longer...$2k in the envelope with a caveat..."stop talking about getting an Upright and just go and do it. Get a stand too, because I think it will look cool in the living room"

I'm off to read the DB newb section...done lots of preliminary research (always looking), but still not quite sure where to go next.

Not looking for anything fancy. I'm thinking 3/4 laminated. Play mainly jazz (quintet) and big band atm.

Any thoughts? Besides what a great wife I have! =)

There are a lot of good ply's in that price range (Upton, Shen, etc) but, since you're in a very musically active city (Chicago according to your profile) I would keep an eye out on Craigslist, local adds, local Luthier's shops, etc and see if you can find a cool older ply for the money (just my opinion). If you're dedicated to getting a ply you can find some real cool old Kays for a couple grand or so that will not only sound really great, but will have a built in cool factor because they have a history.

That being said, if you want to play arco at all I've seen some really cool hybrids in the 3k + range (I have a Kay right now and this is the area where I'm shopping come tax return time).

No sibs and no adoptees =)

Thanks Flan....yeah I've been looking locally too..A440 in Chicago, couple other places...check out craigslist too, only problem there, I wouldn't know a problem with a DB if I saw one.

I would definitely consider an Upton Laminate. It would make a killer first Double Bass, especially with their set up. That is something very important when first picking up the instrument.

Make friends with a good luthier or a bass player who knows a lot about structural stuff. Barring that, you can usually go into a luthier with a bass and ask them what they think. Especially if your seller is local, see if they will meet you at a luthier's shop to get it checked out before you fork over cash,

Go check out Mark Sonksen. He's a great guy to deal with... I bought my upright from him (Shen SB180 Hybrid), and I'm also currently studying jazz with Mark as well. He'll treat you right!
