new to doublebass... help!

I know nothing about double bass but want one. What is the most affordable quality built double bass on the market? I would prefer to buy something used but have no idea what is good. I do not have alot of money but if I am going to buy a double bass I want to buy a quality built bass. I saw a term I liked on tb "buy once cry once". I simply don't have thousands to spend.I would be using it for roots style music;rock, blues, country and I want to get into some rockabilly. I need education and guidance, pretty please with sugar on top!

Welcome here! The DB is pretty cool.

Perhaps you haven't seen these, but they can be pretty helpful:

What is your budget and where do you live?

General advice: buy from a real bass shop. Stay away from on-line mass musical instrument marketers and guitar shops. Above all, steer clear of the CCBs (Cheap Chinese Basses) sold on eBay and the like. They are, generally, nightmares. (Note that there are some fine Chinese basses out there-- they don't sell for $500).

Don't know where you live so it's difficult to point you to a good shop to try some basses. For the type of music you will be playing, my advice is to buy a quality plywood (laminated) bass. Brand names aren't terribly significant, but as Drurb said, stay away from future kindling.
Chinese kindling may be branded Cremona, Palatino or relabled by the shop. I have seen kindling labeled as something sounding Italian sold through on-line mass merchandisers for the price of a quality instrument available through a local shop. Educate yourself.
American Standard and Kay basses CAN be good basses for your desired use, but beware. Loose neck joints and/or neck damage are common problems. A healthy, well set up plywood bass will cost you somewhere between $1k and $2k. There are occasional deals below that range and some very nice basses above that, but that is probably reasonable. Don't forget to budget for a pickup and suitable strings.

You must spend some time playing a variety of instruments in order to know what you are looking for.

Thanks! I live in Kansas City Mo. I am not aware of any stores in the area that sell db's. I will keep my eyes open and be patient, something will come along.
