New Eastman (to me)

Hey Folks,

I'm a bit giddy. I've been very happy with the Shen SB80 I've been hotrodding and using. But, I've been searching for a budget carved bass with more of a "mature" and dark sound. Found one.

It may not be the greatest, but I found a used Eastman VB305, and was able to trade the Shen and only had to kick in a little cash. Came with a Bobelok bag and Dorfler bow.

I'll be on the search for an appopriate pick-up for it. I had been using the K&K (like the mic but not the pick-up), and a Realist (not the best for a stiff plywood top). Maybe the Realist would be a good choice now on a fully carved bass.

Hopefully the Dominant's I've been using will take to the new bass, or vice-versa. I really don't want to start another string search as I like the DOM's quite a bit.

Anyway, pardon the silly post, but I couldn't help myself.

thats a nice looking bass.
i'm sure the dominants will be nice sounding.
one off topic question since i'm thinking about it, how does the dominant E compare to a spirocore mittel E in terms of stiffness?

It's about the same in terms of tension, but it's a stiffer feeling string, and a little thicker. I'm using a full Dominant set these days, and the spiros on my students basses feel kind of wussy by comparison. Somewhere in the Strings forum there's a tension chart on both strings, but it only tells part of the story. HTH.

What a pretty instrument... I especially like how it is lighter at the edges. Very elegant shape, too.

Congrats!

So is it a left-hander, Bill? Only, in your picture (which admittedly looks like it was taken a while ago) you're definitely showing southpaw tendencies...

Thanks for reminding me about the my little "icon" picture. Now there are two of them.

My son, the dude with the P-Bass, for some reason grabs instruments left handed. But that's the only thing he does that way. His sister, newly arrived, just grabs everything. We'll see how this all turns out.

Well, apart from not being left-handed, that's how I play bass too - with my tongue sticking out...

Oh, and congrats on your new daughter!
