New kid in town..

Dear friends, the eternal quest for "the sound" drove me again in Central Europe, looking for a bass with a "booming" piz tone. After a succesful business trip in Germany i visited the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. I tried many basses in various specialized shops, luthiers, even the Strunal factory in Luby and some private workshops in the area. I did not find anything according to my expectations. A Cleveland hybrid i tried in the States some time ago had set my upper limit and my standard rather high.

I kept my last visit for Atelier Paganini in Prague. This shop is a must for everyone looking for instruments of the violin family. The owner, Miroslav Bures, is a man to do business with and in the past i bought some excellent violins from his shop. I tried his basses (fifteen more or less) and i found a German bass, made by an Albin Lutwig Paulus Jr in Markneukirchen. It is a typical German bass with outer linings, fully carved with beautiful tonewoods. It delivered a thunderous piz sound (strung with Spiros mittel) and has a warm, focused arco response. I liked it, the price was reasonable so i bought it and the Atelier delivered it to Greece safely and quickly in seven days. Some photos follow.
Now i'm discussing a teaching assignment for the summer in the States. If everything will be OK, i plan to sell some of my inventory and come back with an Arnold's Cleveland hybrid. It will be the last kid in town.

If it plays as well as it looks you've got a very nice bass there. Gorgeous proportions!
