NEW SB 180!

Yep, another "I gotta new bass" thread!

But I did. I just received today my new Shen SB 180 bass from no less than Nick Lloyd in Cincinnati. It came with Full Circle PUs, Spiro Mettels, and a lightweight Shen bag (I already have a nice padded gig bag.) I'll post photos later - it's snowing like h*ll here in eastern WV and the camera is in my pickup truck.

I gotta give Mr. Nick a complement. The setup on this bass is excellent. His attention to detail at the bridge, nut and finger board dressing is pure professional to say the least. Atta-boy, Nick!

The sound is just what I was looking for...Fuller than the plys I have been playing with more mid tones and an overall deeper sound. Oh, I'll keep my ply Englehardt EG-9 for the humid and outdoor gigs, but the Shen just has the tone, baby!

P.S. It was shipped FedEx freight. No problem. I picked it up at the FedEx freight warehouse and inspected it there at delivery. I complement their shipping procedures. Not even a single dent, tweek or dimple in the box that was strapped to a pallet. YMMV.

Let me add my congratulations. Tell Nnick Lloyd that there's something wonky with his site (it's giving error messages to us Mac people). And yes: pictures asap. You can't believe how much we live vicariously through your happiness.

OK, here's some photos. I trudged out through 10-inches of snow just to get the blasted camera out of the truck... Uphill both ways! Geez, you guys are worse than my boss!

Spend sometime with the bow and get that puppy to open up. You'll be amazed at the difference when compared to the Engel. Congrats!

Nice bass man, love the finish on the back. Where are you in WV? I'm in Martinsburg and am wondering how long the trip is to Nick's shop.

What Trip?

Najcross,

I sampled the SB-180 previously and knew that was the bass I wanted for my use and price range. Mr. Nick Lloyd has an excellent reputation throughout the DB community. I figured with his training and expertise as a master luthier I could trust him to provide a bass set up to my specs. I know I will get blasted by others (who in all honestly are probably right) for saying that I should not have purchased an almost $3k bass without first playing it. But, Shen basses have been proven performers. I am very satisfied with my decision.

The trip is overnight for FedEx freight, BTW...

I am currently looking for a bass for college and was recommended by a member to look into his basses. He had just got a Shen from Nick and couldn't speak more highly of his work. I probably am going to have a bass built for me not being able to play it first is pretty frightning.

Thumbs up Nick Lloyd Basses . . .

najcross - Nick enjoys a great, well-earned/deserved reputation in the upright bass community: http://www.nicklloydbasses.com/
