New Standard ....lefty.

Good morning all,
I'm picking up my New Standard Ply. ( a lefty), from Arnold's shop on Saturday.....very exciting...and a little nervous. I decided to string it with Gamuts and E.P.'s. I'm playing Bluegrass ...so I'm hoping to pound a Banjo player into the ground with it. I'm looking forward to meeting with Arnold, Jed and Wil, they have been terrific to work with.
I'll write more after I've has some time to play it in a bit.
Cheers,
Kirk

I decided on the Cleveland Ply, I played a right handed version about a year ago while Arnold was doing some tweaking on a carved bass of mine, and said ...hmmmmm this is quite nice! I sold an old Kay of mine ( to a great guy from Va.here on talkbass) ..... saved some gig money and went for it. I haven't played a set of gut strings in over twenty years, so I'm hoping the transition from steel to guts won't be a big problem. I'm sure it'll be a few months before bass, strings and myself settle in. I'll post some pictures soon.
Thanks to all who chimed in about string choices.

Way To Go CandyMan . I'll bet you are going to have big fun playing bluegrass now. Show us some pictures sometime. Sounds like everything worked out for everyone ..... Tejano has a one-of-a-kind gorgeous lefty Kay and you have a big boomer lefty ply Cleve . I'm predicting that you will enjoy the Gamut guts. Have Fun and "Play It Like You Mean It".

P.S. After you "pound a Banjo player into the ground with it", could you please drive out west? I'll pay gas money . I have several local banjo players that are in serious need of some pounding . Better yet ... I better get a Cleve and do it myself.

I'm guessing that it will be a serious bluegrass cannon. Prepare for Big Fun.

Oh man, that just adds fuel to poor Candyman's fire. hehehe...

I remember when I was sitting out here, 5000 miles away, waiting for my La Scala to ship from Arnold and Wil. Don Higdon stopped by their shop and played my bass, and then dropped me a note telling me how sweet it was. After that, I pretty much put a folding chair in the driveway, waiting for the delivery truck to come.

Good morning Bob, Mingus , Marcus and all !
Yipes, the first two words out of my mouth were "holy crap" ....what they say about the N.S Cleveland ply are true....BIG sound. The Gamuts are giving me a little trouble......I'm finding in order to get a nice clear note ( no buzz) I have to adjust my left hand technique......I'm thinking it may be because they are new. I place a rubber mute on the bridge to knock off a little of the high overtones until they break in. I gotta say the bass and gut combo sounds a lot like Roy Husky Jr. The Evah .P's sound great....I really do like the feel and sound. My sweetheart, Sue and I spent about an hour talking with Arnold, Wil and Jed ....we would have loved to stay longer, but they had to get back to work and we needed to hit the road back to Mass. for dinner witrh friends. I'll try and get some pictures posted by the weekend.
Thanks to all!
Cheers, Kirk

Har-dee-har-har.....yup, the whole trip was a whirl wind. I don't know why I was in such a rush to get back to snowy ol' Vermont.....-18 degrees last night. Well, Sue and I were visiting friends in Mass, ( dinner was at their home) so I did get to play a bit while dinner was in the oven. The part I left out was the five bottles of tasty red wine we drank the night before we drove to N.Y to pick up the N.S........no one was looking too chipper at the breakfast table that morning.

That could be partially due to the five bottles of red wine.

I could be wrong, but it seems that everyone experiences a little of that with guts when they're new. New bass, new strings, new technique. All of you will no doubt start getting along in short order, and then you'll be the southpaw in the back with the big grin on your face.

Guts seem to get better with age. Sort of like... hmm... red wine.
