New Strunal 50/4 Blonde

I've been on the hunt for months ... (thank you to TBDB forum for all the information!). Stopped in at a local shop owned by Mike Asetta ( http://www.mikeasetta.com ) and a Strunal 50/4 jumped out at me. I'm a sucker for pretty blondes, and this was no different. She sounded great, ebony fingerboard and tailpiece, adjustable bridge, Obligato strings, and nicely set up. I couldn't resist, and now I have my first bass. I'll post some pics later in the week when I pick her up, the stock picture below doesn't do it justice. From what I gather, it's a decent student level bass ... which, for now, is all I really need. I play bluegrass, country, blues ... and don't need a carved or hybrid bass. I paid just a bit more than a similar Engelhardt EG-9 would have been (without shipping) from a major sponsor here, so I'm pleased (until someone here tells me how I got screwed ... ).

I also asked Mike about lessons, and I'll be taking them from him unless someone recommends someone closer to Hartford. I'm like a kid at Christmas ... whoo-hoo!

Congrats

Congrats on the new bass! The blondes always catch my eyes too, but I was into oiled brunettes when I bought my bass.

Good choice mate. Try also the Spirocores mittel in the first chance and maybe you'll like it more. Also a good idea is to change the soundpost with a new one with a denser grain, with a diameter of 19-20 mm. I tried many of these basses and almost all of them delivered a warm, decent sound. Only two of them had a "pingy" piz sound, which changed dramatically with the Spirocores and anew soundpost. Have fun with it.

I brought my new blond home today, played for an hour or so ... and yes, I have a 1/2" blood blister on my right index finger ... ... I guess that bass guitar callous I had there is NOTHING compared what's coming in the future. I plugged my iPod into my little Roland AC-60 amp I use for small acoustic gigs, and fired up some bluegrass favorites and played along. Any reservations I had about playing DB were quickly dispelled ... this is gonna be a fun trip!

The trip has just begun ... and I'm lovin' it! The blister went down (still a pretty ugly shade of brownish maroon, though ... grin!). I think I discovered that it's unwise to play pizz after someone's played arco ... without wiping the rosin off the strings ...

I couldn't help myself, and had to pick it up again today. It's going to take a while before I get my intonation just right (but I'm damn close now). I can't wait to start some lessons from a good teacher. I don't think there's ANY instrument quite like a double bass. I don't know about you all, but I feel blessed to own one.

Uh, you don't know about us all? Hey, we all fell in love before you did! Just wait!
