Just an idea, but can we all try to remember that opinions don't always agree, and that it's not necessary to change someone else's opinion and get proof in writing? Let's try to have a little more discussion and a little less bickering, what?

Just for the record and since it came up, I sold a carved bass to get my hybrid because the hybrid is simply a better bass. Put another way, that bass is just a flat out bad mammajamma and for me, playing and sounding the way it does, I couldn't care less what it's made of. I should also qualify that by adding that the hybrid has a laminated little sister of the same make that lives in my office, and it's also a great bass... but not on the level of the hybrid. I'm not sure if that makes things clearer or more confusing, but there it is.

In the end, the best advice is always to play a lot of basses and marry the one that steals your heart, no matter what she's made of. IMO, of course.

I think we can all agree on that.

There you go again, being reasonable.

And getting back to the original poster's question, there are a lot of really nice sounding, well-made, Chinese-made laminate basses in the $1800+ range, and if I was starting out now and money was an issue, that's what I'd buy. They're not as loud as a good carved bass, and won't improve as much with age, but they'll need less repair and maintenance, which is another consideration when you're young and not rolling in $$$.
