New Upton In the Works

Chris... the "finisher" at Upton was kind enough to e-mail me the very first steps he's taken in finishing my new deluxe-top "Bohemian".... this part of the project will take about two more days of oiling/varnishing or whatever it is they do... the colors will change dramatically as will the overall finish. Set-up will follow. More photos will be posted as they become available... hopefully by early next week. I'm hoping for a real sweet bass... It'll be named "Sweetie" after my wife who got it for me as a Christmas gift ! More postings to follow...

Congrats.
That top looks great.
I would have been tempted to leave it like that, I'm sure the end result will be amazing.

Congrats on the beautiful bass, mine is going to varnish next week so I should be getting mine roughly around the time you get yours. I can't wait to actually get it.

Looks to be the start of a beautiful bass. I've been considering an Upton Bohemian as a possible new bass. Love the lines on them.

The big consideration is that I play with a community "big band" and wanted a bass that would pump a lot of sound... hence the hybrid status... although I also added the deluxe top for combo work where maybe you'd be able to hear the bass more than the amp. The other thing was that the upper bout was "supersized", here again to support an extended "pump" sound... move a lot of air.

It'll have a Full Circle and probably (I'm still kicking this around) a mixture of Mittels (on the E-A) and possibly obligatos on the D-G... I'm a "bottom feeder" and really want to have a real growl... I have to see what their set-up guy suggests on this.

Maybe late next week ?... it's be "sweet" !

Congrats! Looks really sweet. Especially because you're interested in a big sound, I suggest that you go mittels all the way or even Evah weich. I (and others) have found Oblis to "give up" on the bandstand, although they have a nice warm sound and sound great in one's living room.

3 New Photos.... The Birth of a Bohemian...

Three more photos from Chris at Upton today.... I requested a satin finish with some light wear areas to give the instrument a little more "mojo" than some of the basses available right from a manufacturer today. I also requested the neck be blended into the head stock & body, rather than have a clear line of "definition" between the finishing coats of the two. The tuners will be "antiqued". I don't know how much more he has to do before this instrument gets handed over to Jack, their set-up guy... but I think it looks really nice. Feel free to post your observations about this, I'd like to hear them... Art, Maine

Looks beautiful! Now, uh... it's a double-bass. It has no headstock. It has a scroll and pegbox.
