New Wan-Bernadel

Picked this honey up from Steve Koscica over at String Emporium in Chandler, AZ Absolutely had a blast talking bass/bassists with Steve and playing basses for most of a day. Todd Coolman has one of these beauts too.

Funny you should post this today as one of my students just brought the Wan he has on trial to his lesson this morning.

Very nice bass, big sound and set up well. The outer workmanship seems very good to my untrained eye. Impressive bass, especially for the price.

Congrats on yours!

thanks, Eric!

Just got it back after Lisa at Los Angeles Bass Works installed a new bridge and set up. The original bridge has the delrin adjusters that have a much larger thread making it unusable with a Full Circle pickup.

Probably one of the best values in a Chinese bass these days (in my opinion). Nice thick ebony fingerboard, figured woods, individual mortised tuners. I love it!

a couple more:

Very nice bass! I sent Steve a deposit check before I tried and bought my New Standard. Although I really wanted to play on one, I had a hard time getting my head around the whole shipping a bass 2500 miles to try thing. But what a value, from all you hear about them. Congrats!

Beautiful!

Excuse the display of my ignorance, but what kind of strings are those?

They're kind of a new string, Velvet Compas Blues. the outer wrap is copper. A bud told me they're like "Rotosounds for upright". synthetic core, low tension too, thought I'd give 'em a try.

Ah, it's nice to see a new Bernadel player! I've had mine for a couple of years and just love it! It's so much fun to hear how she breaks in with time and sounds better and better. Your bass is really sexy!!

Steve's a great guy to deal with too. I had alot of fun just talking to him and deciding whether to go with the Bernadel or not. You're gonna love it!!

I tried those yesterday on a cat's bass...they're VERY cool. They have a bit of roll under the fingers, like obligatos. VERY growly and great for jazz.

Has anyone A-B'd the Wan Bernadel against the Shen Willow? I'd be curious to know how they stack up against each other.

Both nice basses, the Wan is more beautiful looking to my eye, and violin corners are nice. The 3/4 willow has more sloping shoulders, I seem to remember. I think I was more impressed with the sound of the Wan also, but it's been a while since I've played a Willow.

Please remember, individual instruments of either "brand" are not identical, so these kinds of comparisons are not valid across the board.

thanks, Jake!

"Without sounding too redundant….it’s the way the originals were made as well. Oil varnishes are too, all hand applied and hand rubbed."

shipping air

I'd say Steve does make it easy to 'try a bass' via air mail.
Unless you are way too far from a major air center or drive a smart car, his shipping fee is reasonable and his basses
come with a great set up....I'd say at least call him for details
on any bass he has in his shop...he will make it worth your time. and check the other cool basses at the Bass Cafe.

Hmm. From the pic, it sure looks like spirit varnish given the shine. Oh well, it's pretty anyway.

Wan Bernadel

@Glenfong- One correction...I do not nor have I ever owned the Wan Bernadel, although I am sure it is a decent instrument in its price range. Best, Todd Coolman
