New York Philharmonic: What are they playing?

Who made their basses that they use the most regularly? I just saw them tonight -they were amazing and it is my first time in NYC. To David Gage's on Monday and Kolstein's in Baldwin on Tuesday. Lookin' to buy (a school/orchestral basss)

Welcome to NYC, my friend. Gage is great, though you have to pay that extra tax for shopping in NYC, if you know what I mean. :-)

Good luck, though, man! I hope you find what you're lookin' 'round for. If you want a laugh you can play the "double bass" at Sam Ash on 48th.

They're playing their asses off (Okamoto is a monster bassist). Good luck with your bass purchase. Have you been by Bill Merchant's shop? Might be worth checking.. and if you can, take a trip up to Arnold's. And there's at least one fellow NYC-based TB'er selling their bass on the TB classifieds.

I'll try but no promises, as my parents are rather down on leaving the city while we're here as it would be a "full day affair" and it's a family trip. I tried explaining to them that this was the $10,000 question but they said they didn't care

But wait.. they said they'd go to Kolstein's, yet they won't go to Arnold's? What's the difference, really.. LI and W'chester are both the burbs and (roughly) equally far from the city. Just sayin'..

Maybe they'd rather stay in the smog and racket inside the city rather than enjoy the calm of a just slightly more northern spot.

Driving it takes the same amount of time to visit Kolstiens from Manhattan as it does AES.

I've visited both of those plus Gage and Ken Smith in PA.

I'd look for a bass from AES or Ken Smith over the others, however Kolstiens and Gage usually have good stuff. Might have to pay a couple extra bucks for where it's sitting though.

For what my opinion is worth i say that i'd sell my kidney to raise the funds for a visit to Arnold's shop and for the purchase of a Cleveland hybrid.

Well that's part of it. They don't want to have to have a car. They want to be able to take a train (which is what we're doing.) And I don't know how much of the trip they want to spend on this. Oh, visited Gage today -found a MONSTROUS fiver BUT it's just out of my price range. Doesn't happen to belong to one of our TB'ers does it? Apparently someone from the Met Opera was looking at buying it... I may have to beat them to it but I doubt my parents would actually pay for it

Under 15k. It's technically around 10k but my dad showed quite a bit of flexibility today.
