newbie question

hey guys, i've been here a while, but mostly in the electric bass threads.

Anyway, I am planning on going to college for music education and Bass Performance, so lately I am thinking of picking up a cheap upright to start learning.

EDIT: deleted link, to many problems

No. You can't play those in orchestra. Get one of these and you'll have all ensembles covered.

The link Jallen gave you is correct. Expect to pay 1600-1800 for a laminated bass , 2500-5800 for a hybrid and on up for a carved bass.

I was searching the web and sawThis

Would this be a good double bass to at least start out on?
+1 on the Uptons. Now, you said you were planning to go to college for music education and Bass Performance and wanted a cheap upright. The link you provided is not an upright at all-- cheap or not. Given how serious you are, it seems odd that you would consider anything less than the real deal.

Most of us here can sympathize with the cost issue, especially for one who is just starting out. The best advice I can offer you is to vanquish the notion of "cheap" from your considerations. A "cheap" bass is a waste of money and time. It will fight you all the way, often prevent you from developing good technique, will not encourage you to play, and might just fall apart.

The price-points you were given in previous posts are right on the money (pun intended). Go for the best bass you can get in your hands. You will not regret doing so. You are likely to regret not doing so. Reasonable instruments can always be sold or traded for a substantial portion (if not all) of what you paid. "Cheap" instruments cannot be.

Finally, READ THE NEWBIE LINKS.

Edit: Something is wrong here. The link you provided as being something you were considering is a NS EUB for $2700. jallenbass suggested a fine Upton hybrid for $2600. Your reply was that you would go for something like that if you had the money. On most days of the week, $2600 is less than $2700. Huh?

the link is an NS EUB? wow, guessed I linked it wrong.. it was just a cheap upright for about 850 at samash.com. I like the NS EUB's but I rather get an acousitc upright at first.

Drub, I have been looking through the newbie links, thanks though. Yea, I am gonna go towards one of the basses ont he upton site now, since I have been spending the day reaserching and ya, the link I gave is crap.

I know you guys hate the chinese-made one, but they are about 300 dollers cheaper, just depends on how big the student loan I get, minus school books and tuition.

edit: the link works fine for me, *shrugs* oh well. thanks for the input.

Well, now you know why jallenbass responded the way he did and why I was wondering why you weren't going for the "real deal." We see a picture and specs for an NS EUB. For what it's worth, this is the link we see (try clearing your browser's cache).

We hate the CCBs (Cheap Chinese Basses) for the reasons I stated earlier regarding "cheap" basses. Actually, they do not end up being about $300 cheaper at all. What they often end up being is about $850 more expensive. When they split apart and/or implode, you've lost your entire investment.

Stick with the Uptons. They are a fine choice. In fact, the New Standards aside (which are much more expensive), the Uptons are, perhaps, the best laminated basses you can buy. The Upton hybrids are also a fantastically sweet deal. You've probably read that over and over again here.

I'm currently renting a Shen SB80 for $50/month. 100% of my rental fees will go toward the purchase of a bass if I buy from the rental place. Since their service is good, they have a nice selection, and my instructor is also their set-up guy, it's likely I'll go that route. Heck, I may just keep renting the Shen and have it paid off in 2 years interest free. It's a very nice bass for the $$.

I would suggest you follow ThomasRHoward's method. Rent before you buy one, particularly if you're going in the cheapie range. That way you don't have to shell out all that dough on an instrument you may hate and not stick with. You may not like playing double bass at all. Rent before you buy, and if the shop has a rent-to-own program, check it out.

I rented a bass for about eight or nine months before I purchased one. I didn't buy the one I had rented, because it was crap.
