Octobass, up close and personal

My search offered up numerous threads in the last 10 years that refer to the Octobass, so instead of reviving and old one, I thought I'd start fresh.

Just got back from Paris and wanted to share this.

Really awesome mate, I will definitely make sure that I'll visit this museum in the nearby future (I live here in The Netherlands btw).

Going to persuade my girl now to visit Paris, France again for the weekend.

Pretty cool. Still, it's kind of sad that there doesn't seem to be one Octabass anywhere in the world which is still being played. In fact, is there anyone out there living who has played one or even heard one live? Perhaps it would be a great promotional tool for the next big bass event taking place in Paris to convince "Cite de la Musique"" to drag the thing out of mothballs, let the local luthiers put it into playing order, and let the participants have a crack at it. That would be the candy which would make the trip a "must do" for me!

That's what I told my chiropractor. You must stand corrected if you're going to play that thing.

Good business opportunity for you if they ever need to repair its capos.

Lots of questions...

How do you get it to the gig?
Will the ergonomic bass stool be sufficient or do we need an 'octostool'?
Will a standard end pin wheel be enough or will we have to find an old farm tractor wheel?
How many spruce, maple and ebony trees to build one?
Would it need its own vehicle registration and tags?
The bow????

One must wonder.

Yeah, the bow. No one would make fun of you with that thing in your hand!

What an awesome place! Thanks for sharing.

I'd like to hear the storm scene from Beethoven No. 6 on that puppy!

Thanks for sharing. The German speaking kids in the background seem impressed. Very nice!

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder what the excerpt list was for that thing?

Thanks for sharing jbybj! I was thoroughly entertained!

And yes that was one messed up violin (at the end of your video). I saw one very similar to that in the Berlin musical instrument museum. It's like a violin with tumors. And I think I saw another that was a combination of a violin with a horn (or maybe a horn that swallowed a violin).

I'm sure the Octobass made the whole trip to Paris worthwhile...but I hope you had SOME time left for the Louvre or the Musee' d'Orsay.

Jauqo,
What kind of speakers do you pack? I was going to click on some of your mp3 samples, but my puny little desktop monitors probably don't go down even to your highest open string!
