A Newbie chimes in

Grettings,

I'm brand new to the DB forum and it may be that this post is more suitable for a different kind of discussion (I chose the Pollman forum because I believe their shop is in Mittenwald). Anyhow, I have a very nice 3/4 Mittenwald bass from the 20's. Back is carved; equipped with adjustable bridge; very nice cello quality when played arco. I purchased it 35 years ago from a L.A. bassist for approximately $1300.00 and I'd like to put it up for sale. I know it's next to impossible to get an instrument's current value from a such a meagre description, but does anybody have a ball-park figure in mind? I would also greatly appreciate any recomendations for bass luthiers in the L.A/ OC area of southern CA, who could give the bass a once-over. Finally, what's a good venue for advertizing the sale of a double bass? Is Craig's list a good choice? How about E-Bay?

Glad to be a new member here.

All the best,

-Hygelac

Hi,

Welcome to TB. Please allow me to be the first to ask for pictures, and also the first to offer to take it off your hands for $1301.

In my opinion, craigslist would be a terrible venue to sell your bass. Too many kooks, too much cheap crap. eBay might be slightly better, but it's only slightly less of a garage sale than craig's.

If you did not want to advertise it on this forum including photos and a written estimate from a known and respected bass luthier, you could consign it at Lemur or another SoCal bass shop.

Lisa Gass of LA Bass Works has an excellent reputation. Having it on consignment in a shop will get it
more exposure, most will take a 15-20% commission. It's a buyer's market now, I noticed a nice Wilfer
in the TB ads for $5500. That is a bargain price for that model.

I asked my teacher about Pollman's, and his response was something along the lines of them being hit or miss. Some of them were tubby, but some of the ones he'd played were cannons. He didn't recommend I get one, though, because of the price and the whole "hit or miss" thing.
