peg tuners?

what's the logic behind peg style tuning machines? i'm talking about the ones with the knobs that protrude from the left and right of the scroll. are these pegs purely aesthetic or do they serve a purpose?

I think it is mostly for aesthetics. You do get an added bonus of having an easy place to put your ear against to listen to yourself. If you plan on getting an extension then the knobs can get in the way when using it.

The wooden peg is like a giant cello-style friction peg with a geared metal collar around the base. Its the middle step between friction peg and mechanical tuner. The wooden shaft is a fair bit lighter than the metal equivalent and will consequently have an effect on the sound.

Try a search for 'hatpeg tuners' in the Setup & Repair Forum - this was discussed a few months ago.

And yes, some people think they're beautiful.
