A bass is a major investment not only of money but space and what it can do for you musically and careerwise.

If you lay out a medium amount of cash and get a bass that is just OK, it can be difficult to convince yourself to upgrade. However if you try as many basses as possible (renting several over a year or more, calling up the pros and asking to try theirs (you can also let them know you are looking), going to shops, hanging around the back door of the symphony hall, going to jazz clubs, travelling to a major city just to visit a shop or hear a particular piece of music/artist or...) you may find "The One" you've always been looking for.

Also, a good bow is a more important.

Fill in your profile more and others may be able to point you in the right area to look.

Well, your teacher is more or less right... but, that price is unlikely to include a full setup, and that matters.

If you state your age
Playing experience etc
Then people on this forum will be able to give you better advice.
eg if you are still at school perhaps you could rent a double bass. There is no doubt that at some stage you will have to spend a substantial amount of money to get a 'playable' bass. It might be better to get a rental or a loan of a bass. After a some lessons you might be in a better position to know if the Double Bass is for you.
Good luck in your quest.

thanks a lot again... I had made double bass lessons for half year the is no doubt that I am going to continue the double bass... I am dreaming to take the diploma... the problem is of course with the money beacause I am a student and I cant rent or borrow any bass... and the second problem is that I am learning with an edb and I dont have any contact with other double basses the is no store to go and play with them and I have to buy it from the web and I canot hear it or touch it... So I ask for the model in the link on the top... it deserves to spend that money for my progress???? or its better to stay with my old edb(stagg)... and wait to be a better player and find another 2.000,00???? I hope you understand me sorry for my english....

I suspect few here are familiar with that particular model, but the price suggests that it is not likely to be a good idea. You really need to be sure that you're going to get a good setup, in your circumstances, since you are not going to be able to get that done after the bass arrives.

I suggest you take a train ride somewhere (not sure where, but I suspect Prague or one of the reputable factories in the Czech Republic would be a good call) to go try out some basses and get whatever you buy set up... the cost of the train ticket is very likely to save you enormous problems later. But you're going to need to be prepared to spend up to €1500 at least, preferably €2000, and you'll need to get a case to take the bass home in.

Hi EOZ, welcome to Talkbass. Double bass is a wonderful journey - and you are doing well to ask lots of questions!

You will notice that Europe and other parts of the world have different markets in double basses.

Have a look around this site:

http://www.basschat.co.uk

Several people (mostly from the UK) have used Thomann and other mailorder companies with varying degrees of success and report their experiences there. There are some decent basses to be had for around the 1000 euro mark. Thomann sells Strunal basses that are considered solid and reliable. However, as a previous poster said, keep in mind that a double bass needs a setup and that will cost a bit extra.
