Planning to buy a Double Bass

Hello every one i have been playing electric bass for about 2 years and i like jazz and i like the tone of the UB more than the EB.

Unfortunately , i don't have so much choice because of my location. I was able to find some Strunal basses and Mavis(?) basses. I'm sure there are more but i could not find any.

So, I first would like you to ask what is the difference between "Hybrid" and "Fully Carved" bass?

I heard that those "Mavis" basses are Chinese made craps so i would probably go on with Strunal basses. Which one would you suggest to me?
BTW, I probably won't use bows.

These are my questions for now. Thanks for your forward replies.Sorry if i have some bad english

Your English is just fine. It's customary for folks on TB to answer this way:
  1. Fill out your profile; it will help people here help you (they may know of resources near your physical location, and they will get a better idea of your playing style and goals).
  2. Read the "newbie" links and search the archives. Lots of great stuff in there, including the answers to the questions you asked.
Quickly, though... a "fully carved" instrument is made from pieces of solid wood that have been carved to a particular thickness, and a "hybrid" has some carved pieces (usually the top) but the rest is plywood.

I like the Strunal basses. They are well made and are easy to set up. Which, is something you will need to get done. The best way to find a bass is to find a good teacher to help you. Or at least, a good luthier. There is NOTHING wrong with getting a really good quality plywood bass. It can take you really far. I play them almost exclusively now because I have so many out door gigs and they are just easier to take care of.

Hi arcadas from Instabul
the Strunals are decent instruments and they offer a wide range of models and specifications. If you like a hybrid bass, meaning an isntrument with a carved spruce top and laminated ribs and back, then you have some choices: the 5/35 hybrid with anigrated
laminated back, the 5/21 with quilted laminated back and the 5/27 with Tineo laminated back. The 5/27 is the most resonant instrument, with a floor shaking pizzicatto sound. Strung with Evah Pirazzi Weich strings it delivers a warm arco sound as well. If you can find it in Turkey it is the best choice for you.
If you can't find it in Turkey you can order it directly from the Strunal factory from Luby, Czech Republic. If it is not possible another choice is the Thomman store in Germany, since they carry Strunals in their product line. They offer the Thomman 3 double bass, which is the hybrid 5/35 in a very reasonable price. They perform a basic set-up but you can improve it with your luthier. It's a bit inferior compared with the 5/27 but nevertheless is a stable, resonant and beautiful double bass.
For any other infow please do not hesitate to contact me, either in the forum or via a private message.
