Playing free. Isn't that when the club owner stiffs you at the end of the night and you don't get paid?

To all those who suggest getting a teacher, it seems silly to contribute if you don't have a suggestion that directly answers the question. "Get a teacher" could be the default answer for any question. The questioner is looking for specific advise from this forum regarding his problem.
I saw John Clayton play through a whole tune live with the bow in his hand. He sounded . . . well, like John Clayton!

Can I sum up this thread? The answers so far have been:

1. Get a quiver
2. Hold the bow in your hand
3. Hang it on your music stand
4. Get a teacher.

Good luck!

I believe play with no undershorts was in there too.

So my main question....how the freaking hell do you switch so fast from arco to pizzicato? I mean short of dropping the bow (lol, not happening) I just don't see how in less than a beat you get rid of it. Any help/suggestions?

A whole lot of grief could have been avoided if we had been told this up front.
For this, you can just grab the bow like a hammer or a tennis raquet. If you're late to the string, start piano so no one hears you start, and smoothly crescendo as necessary.

the REAL answer is, quit the bass.

us bass players, always in the back of the band, fighting to be heard, whoring ourselves out to this-country-band or that-jazz-ensemble. You can catch a serious case of bitterness and hostility playing so many different styles. God, I get so angry sometimes. Just thinking about it . . . I . .. AAHHH . . .

OK. under control. So, you can see what becomes of us when we're asked such questions as "what do i do with the bow when i switch from arco to pizz". Now, we may be tempted to simply reply, "stick it where the sun don't shine". Now, I know I've been guilty of it too from time to time . . . just thinking about . . .

DRUMMER CANT KEEP TIME! SINGERS OUT OF TUNE! . . . AHH! . . . MORE WHISKEY! MORE WHISKEY! AHHH . . . LIFE IS PAIN! PAIN! AHHH! . . .

Oh, sorry about that. I really gotta get that under control! Come now TBers, lets keep it together over here on the dark side.

Well, assuming you can get a club gig and an agreement to be paid in the first place.

Talking No, no, here's how to do it

You've seen the hair-metal bands w/ the guitarist who has a strip of double stick tape on his guitar, and a bunch of picks stuck on? When he throws a pick to the crowd, he rips another one off the tape and plays on. So, just adapt that approach to this situation. Get a big quiver, big enough to fit several bows. Or heck, double stick some extra bows directly on the bass. When the pizz section comes along, throw your bow toward the crowd and pluck away. When going back to arco, grab a new bow. I'd suggest investing in inexpensive bows, though.

Or, you know, get a teacher.

Let's really get outside the box. Why should the bow be in motion and not the bass? Fix the bow to a mic stand and rub your bass across it.
