Reccomended bass retailers in San Diego county?

Hey TB, I've been lurking the electric section for years and this is my first post in the upright forums, so bear with me if I sound like a buying noob, cause I am.

Anyway, like the title says is there any recommended places to buy a bass in San Diego county? I went to Allen's music in La Mesa so far and the had a couple nice Beckers for $2200-2800. They're my only real choices on my search thus far-only problem is that their rent to own program doesn't apply to basses. I'll be a college freshmen in a few months so I don't want $2-3k flying out of my bank account. With a rent to own program, my budget would have gotten me such a nice bass otherwise.

A bit about me... I'm not particularly new to the instrument and I want something dependable for use in college. Same goes for the bow; I've been wanting something a little different than all those student Glassers I've used but am not sure how to go about choosing a good German bow. I checked out David N. Jones and he had some nice ones for about $150 at his moving sale. (his shop'll be gone in a week for those wondering)

Hammond-Ashley has a great rental program, which can be a good way to go.

He told me it will be Sacramento so he can stay with his mom in her later years. He doesn't know if or when the violin shop will reopen.

I agree with Tornadobass, you need to check out Lemur. They have the biggest supply of basses in stock that I have ever seen in my travels.

Howdy,

I'm in a newbie in San Diego looking to find an upright much like JoshD. Been playing guitar and other fretted string instruments for over thirty years

I stopped by Hammond-Ashley this weekend and was told that they don't have a rental program for string bass although they said they could order me an all plywood Shen for $2600.00. It would take at least a month to arrive. I may try Lemur, World of Strings, or String Emporium in the mean time but will definitely sign up for a lesson or two with Erik at Hammond-Ashley.

Its a little over two hours to drive to LA and see Lisa at LA
Bass Works. You're going to want to know her anyway. She
can do amazing things with a bunch of wood and some strings.
Also, It would be of great benefit to go up and play a bunch
of basses just to hear and feel different instruments.
Don't be in too big a hurry. Get the right bass for you.
