Recommended Double Basses

I am looking for a way to expand my musical range, and I have been playing double bass for the last 9 months in my High School. I have been playing bass for about 5 years and I love jazz. Can anyone recommend a double bass that will survive in Florida weather, for under $1000. I think a good double bass wouldn't fit under $1000, but I really don't know if I will stick with it as long as Stanley Clarke or John Patitucci.

I know many people here aren't crazy about Kays, but I've had one in FL for 12 years with no problems at all. I'm not crazy about the thinner neck, but it doesn't bother me too much. I found a really good deal on this one and couldn't pass it up.

I used to live in Orlando. I never got a chance to connect with him, but Saul Cornell is a luthier in your area and he might be able to give you some direction. Also, if he's available, Mike Hill is a wonderful teacher. I only got to study with him a short time before I moved, but he really helped me.

Watch Craigslist for an Englehardt. Several folks around the board have found them for $700-$1,000. You probably won't find a Kay anywhere near that price. Avoid the cheap Chinese "instruments" that abound on ebay.

I also found a shop in west palm beach that looks like they have a good selection: Florida Musical Instruments. I haven't been there, but they have a website you can check out and also advertise a rent to own program
