Rent to buy basses?

Does anyone know of a reputable place that has a rent to buy plan? I have a student who will be auditioning for schools next year but could benefit from something other than the plywood he is playing now. The store (don't know which, one he found before starting lessons) he is currently renting from said his bass is worth 3k ( it's not ) so I've been trying to find someplace that is better to deal with.

This is in New Jersey but if it's a place with a good rep I suppose anywhere would do.
