Repair options in Alaska?

I recently moved to Juneau Alaska with my upright bass. I am in need of a good repairman (or repairwoman) - I think my fingerboard is starting to separate from the bass. I wonder if anyone out there knows where I can go for this? It'd be awesome if there was someone in Juneau, but I'm expecting I'll have to go somewhere else like Anchorage...? -Dan

Yikes. I don't know about Alaska, sorry, but a loose fingerboard is sketchy if it isn't fixed. (At least it'd worry me.) If you're handy or someone you know is, you can probably get it done. Just read up a little and use hide glue so nothing is permanent. I'm probably overly careful, but bass necks without boards in general give me the willies, and having a board pop off with strings up to tension isn't my idea of a good time. Never seen it happen though, knock wood.

I imagine that climate is rough on instruments; you guys get some pretty diverse and quick-changing weather, right? Maybe there's a lucrative opening for a good luthier in Alaska.

If you can see Russia from your house, I hear there are some good luthiers there.

Besides checking on John Osnes in Anchorage ( http://home.gci.net/~osnesviolins/ ), mentioned by ctregan in his post (I note he's not listed on Bob Gollihur's website, http://www.gollihurmusic.com/luthiers.cfm , Bob does list a luthier in Vancouver, British Columbia and two others in Victoria, BC. That also puts you close enough to Hammond Ashley in Seattle, WA (I lived in the Seattle area for a few years in the late '70s) if you have to travel that far.

Good luck,

Thanks for all the suggestions (well, most of them, anyway!) I may have found a way to ship it to Seattle if necessary.
