Nice new baby FingusareLongus! Arnold has a nice way of getting a rich looking varnish without antiquing the tar out of it.

Wil deSola handles the varnishing chores on the New Standards. Arnold has too much other work to do...

I think so too -- even more so when he was a puppy. But now he is scrawny and wiry with an almost greyhound or whippet shape. A little pit bull, a little terrier, a little giraffe...

I said it before I’ll say it again…just gorgeous...you’ll need to get a drool bib.

My hats off to Arnold and Wil! I know this bass will sound as good as it looks. The NS have all the great characteristics of their AS ancestors along with the 42” scale and improved neck joint. IMHO these are the legacy upright basses of the future. When I am eighty years old these will be the vintage basses to die for…I am gonna get one of these…promise!

ENJOY…and give Epi a hug from me.

I wonder what will happen.

I think (again what do I know) there is enough room in this bar for both makers and others. Any time you start to compare and make one ups-manship, someone is going to lose out (and get a black eye). There will always be someone with something better, bigger, more expensive, more prestigious…blah, blah, blah. The key is not always getting what you want, but wanting what you have…Sheryl Crow

I applaud Upton for breaking new ground to make the investment and time to build their basses in the USA. In todays global market this in no small feat, especially for a small growing company. This type of pioneer effort takes lots of time, money and perseverance.

But equally Arnold and Wil are serving the same market with a different product, different approach and outstanding results. I too applaud their efforts for being different, thoughtful and looking back into history for their inspiration.

Now before I get thrown out of this bar… Mingus has a great bass…the others will get a great bass after the painful wait is over…lots of love and warm fuzzies for everyone. Remember the women get better looking at closing time…I’m outta here!

Right on! No need to make this a competition at all-- especially because it isn't one. I was just amused by the separate predictions that each of these maker's basses are destined to be collectibles. No one really suggested that there was any mutual exclusivity. That is, they may both become classics. Wouldn't that be cool!

I Love mine. It looks similar.

Those things sound fantastic. I noticed mine got even richer after a year or so of gigs. It got nice and deep. Really great.
this mirrors my first 1.5yr with a La Scala hybrid..

congrats!!

I played that one for a few days and took it out on a gig. It's a fantastic bass, big sound. Too large for me though, between the slightly longer string length than I am used to and the larger body, I was working pretty hard.
