Rubber grommets for better sound

I am sure this is an old remedy for basses and strings that don't sound round enough, but Paul Ingbretsen at Acoustic Image told me to put rubber grommets under the stings on the bridge--with two for the G (and, in my case, C). Made a huge difference and cost zip. The stings still make direct contact with the wood, but are dampened on either side which means less nasty sounds, more good ones.

Haven't taken a shot of my upright with the grommets on, but here they are on the bridge of my Wes Lambe ABG where they work equally well.

Lycon used to include a package of such grommets with each string. I never found them useful or desirable but apparently others did (or do).

Grommets

Interesting...

My Chinese 5 string just had a very bright sound, particularly on the high C. This fixed the problem. Doesn't look particularly elegant, but then neither does the bass.

Grommit is the smart one- Wallace should shut up, IMO.
