Russian Carved top and back worth the money?

So i been trying to save up for a Shen sb-150 but then I came across a russian hybrid bass on craigslist, ill post pix later I dont have my camera right now.

Its Russian made has a carved front and back, strings need to be changed. Its pretty beat up but nothing that cant be fixed. The neck has been repaired, and there is about 4 cracks, 2 on the front, 1 on the rib, and one on the headstock. I wouldnt have bought it if it didnt sound good.

Was $350. a good deal? How much can it cost to repair a few cracks? Any recommendations for affordable strings and a case? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Where in LA are you? Take it (if you can) to one of the local luthiers for an opinion. I played a Russian made bass in Europe one - heavy as a tank but phenomenal sound... So the bass might have potential... If it doesn't kill you in repairs etc

Im in san fernando, its about 15 minutes from hollywood.

This is my first upright bass. As it is now, its playable and to me sounds fantastic. It is a little heavy.
I got it two days ago and am currently working through the simandi book.

I am def gonna take it in to see the repair costs.

I've started research in building a classical upright bass. I have redeemed two cellos and am completing a first cello. In 3yrs of my self directed apprenticeship, I have 10 instruments to my credit, mostly violins. Few basses have crossed my path. I haven't seen many good cheap ones. Sad basses with unfooted bridges, top in need of re-arching...maybe a wing sticking out indicating a need for a new bass bar. On the market are new instruments made with hurry-up wood...cracks form, stuff moves around. My hopes for folks considering buying a bass is that they get to go where they can try a number of well setup basses...do this over time before making a major investment. Happy hunting! :<))
