it was ok. I tried two brands of string..but it still didn't have all that great of a tone IMHO..my 47 Kay C-1 sounded way better. I sold the Schroetter/Strunal to get a fully carved Romanian bass..

Both myself and a friend play on A.Schroetter 3/4 models. After a pro set up and a decent set of strings and 6 months playing in it sounds very nice for a Chinese student bass. In the UK these are fairly accessible basses, sold for approximately £500-£650. Cheaper basses can be picked up for around £350-£400 but these tend to be made entirely of laminate materials with 'ebonised fittings'(could mean anything?) The A.Schroetter is a popular choice as it is a little bit more substancial, solid carved spruce top and real ebony fittings. Popular choice for students on a budget.

I assume by now most people have seen this, but I thought it was a pretty interesting conspectus on Chinese made instruments Schroetter included. And again, maybe you haven't seen it.

Hi Matt, yes i have read this article a while ago its very informative. I think the article is well balanced, whilst these lower end student acoustic basses and other instruments are very playable for us learners they will obviously not have the same heft as say a vintage or quality solid hand made bass. What i do know is that i like my bass and i'm about to start my grade 2 ABRSM.

I told you I came to double bass via tubas and other low brass. To me, you see, my 4/4 laminate is just a big wooden sousaphone, with the tone of my old beloved brass E flat tuba. And furthermore, I don't have to carry the darn thing around on my shoulder, or pucker up and blow my appliances through the mouthpiece. I'm a happy dude.
