Question Sell one to buy one?

Have any of you ever struggled with the decision to sell one of your herd to be able to afford a new bass?

I have a tenor sax that I could sell that would put me over the top to purchase a new bass. I like the sax, but I don't play it much these days.

Any of you guys ever kick yourselves later for selling an instrument to fund another?

I have thought about Uncle Toad and his purchase of the "Queen" which required him to sell some of his collection of vintage instruments.

What's the tenor you might move?

No regrets here. I did what was required to move on. Without it I couldn't have moved on. Made for less stuff to keep track of, store, insure, etc. I'm happy with my choices. I really dig my new old bass.

If you don't play it and it stands between you and what you would play I think it's a no brainer. Now if you have the cash to do what you want instrument wise without cashing in appreciating assets then it's silly to liquidate.

For many of us though the stuff we have laying around can easily add up to moving up kinda money. In my case I emptied a 100 sq ft storage space of stuff I wasn't using and was paying rent on. Netted like $10K on all that **** which is now part of the bass that goes with me wherever I'm playing rather than taking up real estate I have to make monthly payments on.

Shoulda done it a long time ago.

Just last week I sold my electric basses to help pay for a new bow im about to buy. After switching my focus to DB a while ago, my three EBs had been collecting dust, hanging on my wall for the past years. Sure, I liked them, but I figured they would be put to better use if I sold them to get money to help pay for a better bow, which which I was in much more need for than three EBs that I didnt play anymore.

If you are in more need of a new DB than a sax that you dont play much anymore, I'd sell it.

I just sold a double bass I liked to pay, in part, for a better bass. Better, in terms of it being a better fit for me and better sound. It was on consignment and I felt a little bad when I heard it sold, like, its gone forever, but did not feel bad putting the proceeds in my account. It was a nice bass, someone else will really enjoy it, but, compared to my new bass.... I am so much happier with the newer one. Still have a backup too.

I have not hesitated to sell a DB that is not right for me, or bows, or EBs, or pickups, or cabs, and finally, after 7 years or so, I think I have found the right bass for me. At ISB, too, of all places. Absolutely no regrets.
