Ashley, have you had any luck getting recordings? I have e-mailed the Paul Dunmall quartet and they have not replied. I find rave reviews of performances and CD's but I don't find the music. Can you hook me up with a source?

I mostly get min from www.mindyourownmusic.co.uk. Have a look around this website and most of the stuff is on here in the CD shop. Hope this helps.

That looks like a good selection to choose from. Anything in particular that I should start with, Ashley?

The solo CD 'Listen' is fantastic. The Paul Dunmall Quartet album 'Love Warmth Compassion' is also really good. 'The Journey' by the group Mujician is also fantastic. I hope you enjoy the wonderful world of free improv. Im trying to get my solo cd released at the moment which is proving more difficult than planned as many free improv companies do not like solo performance.

I ordered "Listen". The dollar is at .52 pounds. It's probably a good time for the UK folks to buy Gibsons and Fenders!

I've done some of the free improv myself so that is good to know that is what they are up to. Thanks for the information. I usually do the free improv in a quartet. I think sometimes there is strength in numbers, but I admire your courage to go it solo. Check out the website for eyedrum.org. That is the local free improv venue in Atlanta. They record everything. Good luck with your solo CD.

I remember reading somewhere that early, post-civil-war-era banjos were often fretless; I may have read it on a site where a guy was explaining how he had built his that I remember perusing, so it may not have been first-hand knowledge. Anyone know anything about it?

They were fretless. A friend has a reproduction that's built to "spec". The neck has notches(I know there is a better word than notches) where your thumb would rest to let you know your in the right position.
