| Shen SB 150 - Problems? Has anyone had (or heard of) a problem with the wood separating between the neck heal block and the back of the bass on a SB150’s? I went to a very reputable shop Saturday specifically to play one that I know they had. When I couldn’t find it the manager took me to the repair shop and showed it to me. Where the heal of the neck connects to the back of the bass the wood had split open a little less than a ¼”. The neck was still solidly in place. The bass will hold tune and there are no buzzes or intonation issues. There are also no other cracks or seam breaks anywhere on the bass. While the shop was waiting to hear from Shen on whether to return or repair it, a customer brought a 150 in for repair with the same problem. That bass had been purchased over a year ago. The repair guy said it looked like 2 cases of improperly seasoned wood being used.
I can already hear some of your question and comments, so a note about the string shop I was at. I’ve known the owner (violinist) and the manager (bassist) for years. They everything from entry level beginner instruments to stuff in the low to mid 5 figures across the entire string family. Their inventory is stored in climate and humidity controlled environment and is well cared for.
Is this just 2 bad basses or a bigger problem other Shen owners have seen?
