I found a Shen SB100 (had my eyes on a SB80 or possibly an Upton laminated). that appears to be an older model. The price is excellent $700. Can anyone attest to the differences between the older SB100's and the updated ones? This one is about half of what I was expecting to pay.
Thanks,
Doc

Is the buyer desperate to sell, are they not aware of the market value, or is there something wrong with the instrument? Be sure to have a qualified luthier inspect the instrument before writing any checks or you may be looking at a hefty repair bill in the future. |

A pic wouldn't hurt either. Over the years, the varnish has changed from lacquer to oil, and the machines have improved a few times. A few other things have changed on the interior as well. The serial number will look like a backwards date (like 2011-3-22).

Were the early blonde SB 90 models called something like "SB 100 Special" or "SB 100 Bld"? |

That takes me back! That's a very early 100, back when it was our basic plywood. Its current rough equivalent is the SB80. It was made in 1999, and has since gotten the rockabilly treatment. By the looks of the fingerboard, it may be a dyed maple or rosewood. It was originally sold to Art Mize Violin Repair in Lexington, KY in October, 2000.
Steve: yes, the original blondie was an SB100. I think the first ten. Good memory! |

I don't have much experiences with URB's to compare it to but I think I got a good deal. I think it will be a great instrument to get my feet wet. Thanks for the info! |
