Shen SB90 or 2003 Upton SuperSwing

New here,
I have my heart set on a Blonde upright and am considering the Shen SB90. I have also found someone selling their Upton SuperSwing, this is a 2003 and I just talked to Upton and they said it is a laminate that was built in Europe to there specs. Comes with the UB pickup, case, 2 bows, and is the SuperSwing blonde finish. The seller wants $1900. Does anyone have any opinions of these earlier Uptons that were built in Europe. Of course Upton said that their newer built in the USA are better, I don't think I can afford a new Upton right now... Your thoughts please...

If you can play both, do it and decide which you like better. It might be easier to find an SB80 than SB90, I think they are the same except for finish. If you can get your hands on the Upton, take it to a luthier for evaluation before you buy.

If indeed these two basses are being sold locally, there is nothing better than getting your hands on them up close and personal. Acoustic instruments are, in spite of factory assembly, unique creations with qualities you will discover using your equally unique senses. Hope you pick a winner, and let us know which it is!

Yes indeed. The Shen SB90 is at Steve Swans in the S.F. Bay area. Only trouble with the Upton is it's a 2.5 hour drive, but it's all doable. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with the imported Upton's.

If it's just a 2.5 hour drive I'd definitely try the bass first hand.

I may not take that drive. After reviewing some of the pics I can see that this (Romania) Upton is one big shoulder upper bout bass. I am small guy about 5'8" and I think it will not work for me. I asked the seller to send me some measurements but I have not heard back from him.

Well I just could not resist. I just picked up this Shen SB90 from Steve Swan in Burlingame S.F. Steve is a great guy and and he set me up. He has a fantastic shop. It was tough after playing all of the basses he has to offer but for my budget the Shen SB90 was the best for me, plus it's blonde. I think I'm in love

Enjoy! Is it the photograph or is the Bridge slightly tilted.

With the slick lacquer finish on the Shen SB 80 and SB 90 models, the bridge can be knocked out of postiion a little more easily than the oil varnish models when transporting it in a car. The upside is that it is also a little more easy to slide it back into the proper position.

Joe, I remember that crazy topped bass when it came in! I even sent a picture to Steve before shipping it to him, knowing some of my more conservative dealers wouldn't go for it, and some would leap at it. I hope it brings you years of good vibrations.
