Shops in the 95 corridor

I am looking to get a better DB, you can see what I am playing in my profile. I am in school at UMD, but live in CT. My teacher here has given me a list of some shops in the surrounding area, but I was wondering if you guys could point out some shops along I-95 from the DC area up through CT? Really I'm not looking for a particular bass I just want to play as many as I can before making a decision so I know I'm making the right one. Oh the bass would be 100% for jazz.

Have you been to Bob's House of Basses in Bowie, MD? I know people here have mixed feelings about them, but it's pretty close to UMD, and he usually has 10-15 basses there of all varieties.

...and though it's a bit away from I95, I've yet to hear a bad word about about Shenkman Strings, which is about 2 hours away going up I83.

check, among others:

Ken Smith in Perkasie PA
David Gage in NYC
Bill Merchant in NYC
Barrie Kolstein in Baldwin Long Island
Arnold Schnitzer in Brewster NY
...and although his basses are typically set up classical, it may worthwhile to contact Constantin Popescu, in Westport/Greenwich CT

It's Shank's Strings (www.shankstrings.com), and definitely well worth the trip. Some of the inventory is online, but not all.

I don't know what the original poster's budget is, but there's a nice Juzek for sale by a bassist in College Park. I've played it & seriously considered buying it.

3/4 Juzek/Juzak c.1960

+1 on Shank's Strings. Less than two hours from you.
