Some pics of my Cleveland in NY Times

Hey everyone,

I was informed that my trio appears in the NY Times in the article on Slam Poetry. This means you can see & hear my NS Cleveland in action.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/03/books/03slam.html

If you click on the audio slide show, you can hear us play & see more pictures of the bass in action.

If this is the wrong forum, please move it.

Eh, I thought either here or there. I put it here since I figured-it's performance pics & clips of the bass....with a bonus story.

Nice sounding bass! A New Standard is on my fantasy gas list.
Is it a hybrid?
It sounds natural: Are you going thru an amp?

It's a ply. I got it when the plys had solid/carved sides with ply top & back. They changed shortly after to being ply all around.

I use an amp (SWR WM15 at that gig), but it's barely turned up-my bass can bury a poet pretty easily so the amp serves as reinforcement. I believe that is from the DI of the amp. I use a Realist pickup with Spirocore Weichs. Easy to play and a nice sound.

Yep. I play that gig 3 Sundays a month. It's steadily grown & I enjoy being able to play in a setting without a whole lot of musical structure.

You have no idea man. It's such a blast. Show up, setup the bass-they provide the amp & then it's just relaxing. We get money + drinks/booze.

Play preshow music at 6:45, back the open mic 7-8PM, hour break while the featured guest performs (we rarely back them), 9-10PM back the Slam itself. I signal the piano player a starting key with hand signals & then we just make it up. I'm out by 10:15PM. It's close to public transit and is only about 20mins from my apartment.

As my regular guys, Diana Lawrence on piano & Scott Hirtenstein on drums, need to sub out-I bring in subs with a focus on people that I enjoyed playing with in other settings. I feel like since I've been given this opportunity to play in a very relaxed environment, I want to share the wealth. E.g. on the 21st, Scott needs to sub out, so I'm bringing out a buddy of mine who just moved up here from Indiana.

It feels a bit weird being in charge, but I dig it since all I really do is ensure I have players and signal starting keys.
