some recommendations

Greetings,

First off I am new to the forum, nice to meet you all.

Secondly, I am a new double bass player. I have just started playing. My transition is from guitar to double bass. Just checked out the newbie thread btw.

I was wondering if you guys could recommend me some cool jazz/blues songs to play on a 4 string, including the name of the artist and the song name.

Thanks in advance

You might start by learning to play a 12-bar blues progression. Search for that phrase online if you aren't already familiar with it. It is a standard form that appears, sometimes with variation and sometimes not, in hundreds of recorded blues, jazz, and rocky tunes.

Anything done by Willie Dixon is a good start for Blues.

Welcome!
How long playing guitar? Are you already playing jazz and blues on guitar?

maybe:

Born Under a Bad Sign (Albert King)
Spoonful (the Etta James version is cool)
All Blues (Miles Davis)
Footprints (Wayne Shorter)
Moanin' (Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers)

to get you started

I think my absolute favorite piece is Haitian Fight Song by Charles Mingus.

Good luck with that one.

(and if you figure it out, PLEASE let ME know!)

There is a good transcription of this song (also called IIBS Blues) in the Bass Improviser's method by chuck shur, first solo only, then the walking line.

Thanks everyone,

yeah I already play jazz guitar, my favourite jazz artists are Mike Stern, John Scofield, Wes Montgomery, Pat Methany and a few other odd guitarists that play jazz/fusion.

I've been playing guitar for about 2 years now, I've already advanced quite a bit on the instrument.

The reason I took up double bass is to maybe play it along with the guitar for my music practical exams. (which are in around a year and half away)

Thanks for all those recommendations! I'll be sure to look them up!
