SO glad you were able to connect with those guys...Alex is really cool (his English is a little sketchy LOL), and they are good folks. I'm going to the factory on Dec 1 to select a few basses to bring back to the US to sell.
I'm surprised that you needed fingerboard planing. Mine was PERFECT out of the bag...I just needed them to drop the nut quite a bit. Mine GROWLS, and is very even all over the board. I am a STICKLER about setup, and I honestly can't say anything negative about my board. I've had worse fingerboard planings in LA than the way my bass was delivered to me. Who's doing your work? Jon? Lisa? Dave Millard? Do you know Dave (from San Diego)? The ULTIMATE beach hippie, but his work is as good as it gets....he restored an old Pfretschner he found in Mexico from a total bag of busted up parts...the top was in 5 pieces, the back in 4, the neck block had to be redone, new board...essentially kindling. He turned that bag o' bones into a CANNON of a jazz bass! You should try to connect with him...a GOOD man, and great musician!
He's gotta be 75 now.
The tuners are the biggest downside. Those will be swapped when I replace the bridge. I brought a KC Strings endpin tip with me, as well as a set of D'Addario Helicore pizz strings with me, as well as an Underwood. My endpin is fine...doesn't slip or rattle, so it works for me.
The bridge? Yeah, when I get back, I'm having Kruno at http://krunoviolins.com/
cut me a new bridge. He does GREAT work, and is a bassist (as well as a violin maker with many awards to his name), so he knows what we need.
The tailpiece? Ehhh....mine's OK. My bass sounds so good as is, I'm not sure if I wanna mess with it. Maybe get a Pecanic tailpiece down the road, just because it would look great on there! I'd LOVE to try this bass with Spiros or Obligatos...
Anyway, SO glad you had a good experience....if your bass is anything like my bass, I bet you'll be pretty happy! Are you an arco guy? I'd love to hear this bass with Belcantos or Kaplans on there!!! Please let us all know how it turns out!
Please PM me what you paid for shipping for the bass...I'm having them ship my bass, as well as the ones I'm sending back to sell. I'm curious about the shipping cost. Did you have to pick the bass up at the port in Long Beach? A short trip to my fave bass shop, World of Strings, down there in the 'hood in Long Beach!
Jon...working away, always smoking his pipe!
