Yeah, it's funny, sorry I couldn't find any English coverage. They put a lot of subtitles like that here. I guess for the hard of hearing. Also, there are a lot of regional dialects/accents, so maybe to make it easier to understand. Not for us, though, obviously.
Definitely, this kid's a bit of a nutter. There are a lot of collectors in Japan, everything from little anime dolls to very expensive items like the basses, for those who can afford it. I guess when what you want to collect is well beyond your means, life's a b****. I personally don't understand the collecting mentality at all, whether it's someone who bought or stole their collection. Strangely though, I'm kind of glad it turned out this way. Weird as it is, it's a crime of passion rather than an economic one. There's less economic crime here ("give me your money or I'll cut you...") than many places, and I like it that way. It would have been a drag if they were stolen to be sold in China or something. Of course, it's still screwy.
It still kind of cracks me up when I imagine the kid with 3 basses crammed into his mini-cooper, driving them home 50km of Tokyo's tiny, snaking roads, probably with his neck stuck in a funny position, struggling to change gears etc, and then deciding he had to go back for more...
