| Over on the bass guitar side, there was a very distinctive custom bass that was stolen here in Atlanta from a car outside a venue. The story is well documented on the EBG forum, but to make a long story short, after several months the bass turned up, the thief was caught, is being prosecuted, etc.
In these theft or missing cases, it seem that we have some very good chances of getting instruments back if we really use the communications now available to us.
If your instrument gets stolen, let eveyone know the details about your bass. Post it on the French and German forums also. If you have any pictures, post those too. It is good to have a lot of detail shots of your instrument even if you think it looks common. Take descriptions to all of the pawn shops in the area. It will take some time, but if you essentially have every ethical bassist on the planet keeping an eye out;- and that was pretty much the case with the stolen Benevente, you'll get it back. There's just no place to hide something as big as a distinctive bass instrument in a world with international forums. It is going to become an albatross to whoever has it and they will eventually want to be rid of it.
