Strad would've used a laser!

Thought youse guys might like a peek at this. Some time ago Arnold told me about using a laser to set a neck. I mocked him claiming I didn't need it having been born with laservision. However, when I saw it in action at his shop I realized that it was the shizznazz.

Apologies for the poor pics, but it was tuff to get the lighting right to see the laser line and the bass. But you can tell that the laser helps align the three crucial elements of straightness-the head[scroll], end of board, and centerline of body. If you look close on this pic you can actually see the laser line being bisected by the penciled-in centerline. Thanks, Arnold.

Who in the hell knows where that bubbled up from. It kinda means "yee haw", or something like that.

Now look, a few hours ago we were discussing innovation in jazz and I'm not getting stuck in a "hee whack" thing. I'll edit if I have to!

Would you be willing to share the make and model of the laser you're using. I'm assuming it is similar to the type used for leveling ceilings, etc but turned 90 degrees.

Pretty neat. I bet it' s a lot cleaner than snapping a chalk line.

He still uses a chalk line on my bass. The part I don't like is when he drives in the nail to hold it in place.

Know what? It's exactly how Norm Abrams does it. Must be right.

Laservision plumb pyramid

This device does it's thing vertically. What is really cool is that it automatically adjusts to plumb if its platform is out of true by as much as 5 degrees.

You mentioned on the phone about using it as a primitive laser show in your backyard. D'ya have any pix of that?!?!?
Bass looks great, with a proper channel to boot.
Good luck varnishing!

Wow - I had no idea that these things were that inexpensive. I've got metal straight edges that cost more than one of those.

Any Frank Zappa fans out there?

I can never think of Zircon (company making the laser plumb line) without thinking about movin' to Montana soon, gonna be a dental floss tycoon.

Can't wait to get my zircon-encrusted tweezers.

<--big FZ fan.

Jeff I decided to crack open Photoshop and brighten up those pics a bit, in case anyone wants a better look. On my cheesy office monitor they were too dark. I'm sure Paul will go ga-ga over this tool when I show him this thread, thanks!

Last time we discussed it, Arnold had commissions for the next 3 years. Way back when, I had the opportunity to be "next". I hesitated, and suddenly it was a year and a half, then 2, then 3.

Don--You'll be happy to know I've filled most of my orders. So, when will I be seeing you with your deposit?
