Strange Sounds

I have got a second hand bass on trial from a trusted luthier, who is not a double bass specialist. I like the sound but when picking it up I can hear creaking sounds, like old furniture, is this normal? The bass has a crack from the base to the bottom of the right F hole that has been repaired by this luthier.
Also, I studied cello at university but I cannot get a DB teacher for a couple of months and she said not to play before lessons to avoid developing bad technique. As a cellist I understand how learnt bad technique can take weeks, if not months, to repair. So my question is what, if anything, would I be safe practicing? I thought scales and arpeggios from an ABRSM book would be OK.
Sorry if this should not be on this forum
Thanks for any comments
