String Emporium

I have been playing electric bass for about five years and deceided to buy my first UB. I live in southern Colorado, ( 230 miles from Albuquerque, 350 miles from Denver, 425 miles from Phoenix ) so traveling to look at and play alot of basses would require alot of time and money. So, over the past two months I tried to learn as much as I could, about basses and dealers using the net. To make a very long story short, after reading about Thompson basses and String Emporium and because I have friends that I can stay with in Phoenix, I went to Phoenix to visit String Emporium. I looked at twelve basses for over five hours. Steve answered all my questions in a very patient and helpful maner. Even though I am a total beginer with UB, I felt that Steve tried very hard to help me make the right decision. In the end, I bought a carved Hungarian bass. Over the past two months, I have spoken to four dealers across the country, and I must say that they were all very helpful. Steve at String Emporium went above and beyond with me.

One thing I Like about String Emporium is that they have a plethora of information on their website, about the History and Origins of different string makers.. and I don't get the feeling they were trying to sell a bass.. Just a great resource for UB..

Congrats on your new love... Now let's get some pics up...

Nice - congrats!
Sounds like my kind of store - wish there were a place like that around Tampa.

Is this a "copy" of the Grancino here? Very interesting story behind the original. I've never heard of any other Grancino bass; does anyone know of any other examples besides the one I linked?

Cool bass.

If you go to String Emporiums web site, you can see the bass in the Bass Cafe section. The bass looks and sounds wonderful. Steve didn`t tell me anything more about it.

Let the google guide you...

I've heard of others, too. God knows if any were actually made by Grancino.

Oops. Can't believe I never noticed that one at Kolstein's with all the time I waste on the internet. I suppose that one looks a bit more like the one High Vibration bought.

Mike Shank has one, which [i] think was made by Jiri Povolny, a very interesting Czech maker:
