I have a feeling it is a Chinese bass with a German name. I played a bass that was listed as a Testore model but it was $4000. Obviously not the real deal.

To the best of my knowledge Henry Strobel, the book writer and publisher, has not made any basses. However, he has made a bunch of very fine violins, violas and cellos.

I own a Strobel Bass

I've had my Strobel Bass for something along the lines of 2 years now... and i must say i really like it

It cost me somewhere around $2500 and it has a really big sound and it came with an adjustable bridge, ebony fingerboard and tailpiece, a really pretty laquered plywood body(im pretty sure its plywood, but i dont really think it makes it a bad bass). I have Pirastro Jazzer strings on it which sound AWESOME both arco and pizz.

I havent had any problems with it exept for the D tuning head rattles ALOT whenever i hit any notes between open D and a C on the G string. It is really annoying, but it doesnt amplify and i chopped up a styrofoam peanut and stuck it in the gap of the tuning head that was rattling and it signifficantly made it better.

Ill try and answer any questions you guys have about it

strobel

At $2500 that would not be a Henry A. Strobel bass. As Bob Branstetter pointed out, he has written numerous well received books for luthiers. His Useful Measurements for Violin Makers is the standard for the industry. If he has made or makes a double bass I imagine it would be a very good one.

It is not one of his basses. If it says, "sold by" or 'from the shop of" etc it might have been sold by him. I have put my shop label or a business card in basses just to show that they were sold, handled, set up by me etc. A lot of shops do that with no intention of misleading the buyer and some shops have instruments made for them. Howard Core and Company sells instruments they label as Johannes Kohr. Everyone knows where they come from....well, maybe not everyone.

A lot of instruments over the years have been labed outside of the shop that made them to make them sound like something they're not. Often they have used German or Italian names of real makers or similar sounding names and sometimes they just made them up for marketing purposes. I've seen a lot of modern instruments with German names that were Korean made or Chinese made, some labeled in Korea or China and some labled in the states. IF they were labeled in China they should also have "made in China" on the label.

An Eastman bass setup by Strobel sounds like a good instrument.

find out

Let us know what you find out.
It's doubtful that Strobel would be setting up basses for Eastman since they are on opposite sides of the country. They'd have their own set up people.

I suppose it's possible that Strobel designed the bass and has sold his name for it's use? A few years ago the guita maker, Robert Bennedetto had some guitars made by them on his design and I guess they had an agreement to use his name, I think they were discontinued after a short time. I'm guessing he decided he didn't want the his name used on cheap knock offs of his own guitars which bring in the mid 20s the last I heard.

You could also also call Strobel and ask him. His shop is in Oregon and since he's well know you could probably find the contact info on the net.
