Strunal 50/4 Bowable?

I hear good things about the Strunal 50/4 for pizz. (what I get paid to do) That said I really enjoy playing the bow and am wondering if anyone has opinions on the merits of the 50/4 with a bow. I know they have hybrid models and I`m not completely against considering one but I`d rather not deal with the maintenance. Thanks---

Strunal 50/4

I had one for a couple of years. They are bowable with the right strings and set-up but they do not have as complex of a sound as a hybrid or fully carved bass.

I have a Strunal 50/4 (actually glivanos' old bass).

It is bowable, even with Spiros on it, however, a hybrid model with a carved top will be better for arco playing. My friend has a Strunal hybrid and it is easier to get sound out when bowing and simply sounds better when the bowed sound comes out. The pizz sound of the ply and the hybrid are different, so keep that in mind. Normal maintenance is not something to be intimidated of.

Definitely yes, the hybrid models are superior basses in terms of sound complexity. The 5/27 hybrids are very resonant basses, they show a remarcable consistency in construction and IMHO they offer the best value for money European double bass today.
