Student looking buying guide

Hey, can anyone recommend to me a good first UB. My school has a few basses that I use for strings class, but now i need to think about getting my own so i can practice at home and possibly take it with me to college. I need a bass that's student level, but built well... preferably from a reputable manufacturer. Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend reading all of the newbie links. That's what I did and ended up with a Shen bass set up by a great luthier. I couldn't be happier.
