suggestions on a new upright...

hello everyone...i'm new to the forum and new to the bass world, i've been playing for about a year and a half, and i just can't wait to play upright bass... the more i listen to jazz the more i get addicted to it, and i just wanna get started already...so my question is.. i know u aalways get exactly what u pay for, but for a rookie like me...would it be reasonable to get one of those uprights that they sell on e-bay for example.. i believe the brands are "DeVilli"....and "Cremona".. or something....well thanks and hope u guys can swing by to post.... peace...

Go over to the Double Bass forums http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f44/
This is the bass guitar side and please read the newbie thread links.

Stay away from those cheap ebay uprights. They are usually made from green wood, glued together with industrial adhesives which means they can never be repaired if the have a problem and cost more just to try to set one up to play half decently than the cost of the bass. Many of us refer to such basses as BSOs - Bass Shaped Objects.

If you want to find a useable upright, go to people like

www.nicklloydbasses.com
www.kensmithbasses.com
www.urbbob.com
www.uptonbass.com
www.bassesonline.com

and other real bass specialists

These are just a few of the folks who specialize in real double basses. Also count on reserving at least a few hundred dollars for a proper setup. These things are not like bass guitars, where you can buy a cheapie and tweak it a little and have something decent. Everything costs 10X more in the double bass world.

You also may want to look into renting a basss at first or doing a rent to buy thing. Some stores do that and it may be a good option financially.

Peace,
S

i second the move to the double bass forum. and i highly reccomend Upton Bass, its a great place and all the guys that work there are really great. im getting mine from them in a week or 2, and its my second double bass as ive been playing for 6 years. they play great, and are very good for the price, much better than what i first b ought at sam ash. but also, the sam ash basses arent bad tos tart with either as long as theyre set up properly.
