Taiwan / Bass Abroad

I'll be in Taiwan for the next year or two, and I really need something to play. Uprights cost about 1,200 US and I'm okay with that. Problem is that I've gone to numerous stores and they simply don't carry basses, they're all ordered from a catalogue. The one bass I have managed to get my hands on was what I perceived to be very orchestral-oriented (expected for an asian country) - a nice sound, but really really loose action, which made pizz very frustrating. (I'm interested in jazz).

I've only bought a bass once before so I don't know much, and I don't wanna plunk a stack of money on a similar instrument. Any advice? Maybe I played an exception to the rule? Brands/models I could look out for? Getting my bass in America out here?

Thanks a lot.
Ian

oh yeah and the taiwanese bassists i've seen here usually play electric, even in jazz clubs. foreigners (american & japanese dudes) tend to have the uprights. but I haven't gotten out that much yet.

All I'll say is buy a dehumidifier! Actually.. With the humidity the way it is in Taiwan I'd imagine an upright wouldn't last very long there.

Maybe that's why all the locals play electric?

I was just in Hong Kong (yeah, I know it's not exactly 'next door' to Taiwan, but I thought it might be worth mentioning) and found a little music shop called Harmony Music that had a few basses in it. There was a nice German all-solid ($10000-ish AUD) and a Chinese all-solid (can't remember the price on that one) but the stand-out was the solid-top hybrid; damn loud and a really nice sound/tone. Worked out at under $950AUD. Would need the usual set up (tail piece was too high) & string replacement though and I'm not sure about hard cases (although I'm sure you could get something decent made up for ridiculously cheap in a back-street workshop...!)

Build quality actually seemed quite good; well finished inside & out and nothing that screamed 'Danger!'. Panpi bridge. If memory serves me correctly, it had a decent hollow end-pin rather than the usual thin notched solid pin. No photos, I'm afraid. The shop seemed to be more of a musicians' shop than a musical instrument consumers' shop (if that makes sense); if you're interested in the address, let me know.

Maybe get in touch with some bassists over there and ask around who has what basses for sale that are nice. I've seen some decent chinese stuff over there, but you are right no one really carries any bass stuff.
