Take a look to this bass.

I obtained this instrument from a luthier located at Montreal. According to its expertise, this double bass was manufactured in Hungary towards the end of the XIXe century. What do you think about it?
Thank You.

i think its a new (end of 20th/beginning of 21st century) nice "antiqued" hungarian bass.
looks good. i´ve got something similar.
not so much "antiqued" but ok for the money i´ve paid.
whats the price of this one?

I try to download a mp3 that I recorded and I have difficulty of doing it. Nothing better than a sound example.

The sound is killer! I love the tone Luc.

Looks pretty decent, but I'm not huge on light finishes.

Thank you for your comments M.Smith.

According to comments, which you give in connection with my double bass, you seem to very strongly doubt that this instrument is "100% antique". Is this with saying that the old hungarian luthier very known and respected of Montreal, (it has a small museum of ancient string instrument), would have misled me or would have been mistaken?

Are these basses really "fakes"? Unless someone is trying to pass them off as something they're not, to me they just are what they are. Also, they come across to me as pretty obvious; the wear and tear is exagerated, especially in relation to the areas where there is little or no wear. The edges in particular stick out to me. With all the apparent "repairs" and the issues in the varnish, why are the edges so intact? I mean, the edges on my Shen look worse than those do, and I have the luxury of a modern bass bag to haul it around in, not to mention carpeted floors. And then there's the oh-so-perfect grunge in the nooks and crannies; like someone gave a filthy bass a quick once-over with some magic cleaner, but didn't bother to get into the corners. :-/

Well done! yeah nothing like a sound sample! Nice sounding bass too. Wish other people would post samples of their basses ...

I fail to see how selling new instruments with that much time and effort put into "faking" them can be profitable. What kind of an instrument can you buy for $8000? Maybe I'm missing something, but to me, it just doesn't add up. And as far as labels go, since when have they meant anything? We all know that "stradavari" labels and such in violins are never real, why should they be in basses? And unless you're buying an instrument just because of the name inside, what difference does it even make? Personally, if I can buy a bass made by Joe Sixpack for 10k or a Fendt for 35k and they sound the same, I couldn't care less what that label says. The Fendt has no more value to me a a musician, and if it has more value to a collector, well, fine. Let it rot in a vault, because it's not doing us any good.

as ken says, nice pizz sound. thanks luc for the soundsample.
what about arco?

imho it´s really luxurious to spend 8000 for a bass if you only play pizz.

Tell that to all of the great jazz players who have ever lived! I know, many jazz players do arco, but that's a really silly thing to say!
Charlie Hadens Vuillaume, Don Thomsons Chanot, all of Red Mitchells basses all three at least $30,000 a pop.....all fabulous pizz players!!!!! Don Thompson can't bow at all! Red quit bowing entirely after some jerk stole his beloved Nurnberger bow.
Our own Mod Chis doesn't bow at all! I think this bass looks great and sounds good!!!
In fact, I like the looks so well, it's gonna be in my bathroom!
And I think $8,000 is WAY too low a price for this great looking bass. Congratulations Luc!!!
By the way Kenny Boy, those look like Thomastik Orchestra strings to me.

Here's my somewhat aged Hungarian.

I have a new Hungarian bass as well. It's been aged to a degree, but I think the intention was purely cosmetic (don't think it would pass for a genuine Testore ). I previously played a small Jacquet but the sound & tone were a bit light for jazz. There was no way I could afford a large bass of similar pedigree so I was delighted to find this one.
I can understand why bass prices are so high, and agree that the instruments deserve recognition - but how long is it until basses routinely lie unsold and unplayed in dealers' showrooms because of prohibitive pricing?
