Is there any interest out there in this...

I have a Mathias Thoma 3/4 thin body jazz upright that I bought 4 years ago because I was in a pinch and this was the only upright available in my old hometown. Long story short I've made due with it for this long. I'm longing for a new upright and was wondering if there is any interest out there for these basses. I will need to sell this one to be able to afford to get another upright and don't want to waste a lot of time and effort if there isn't any demand for this.

Any information and help is appreciated. The bass worked great for amplified gigs when I was playing larger stages but it doesn't cut it for purely acoustic gigs which I seem to be doing a lot more of lately.

pics can be found here:http://www.rickgbass.com/img/largebass-lg.jpg

thanks again.

Which thread? This wasn't meant to be a for sale ad yet, I was just asking a question from the minds here about whether or not there is even any interest in this bass as an item. Looking more for feedback than offers right now.

OK. I'm game.

No, I'd reckon there would be very little interest in this instrument in the string bass marketplace. If you walked into my shop and asked to put it on consignment, I would probably decline. Unless you priced it to move, which would be in the $300-400 range.

A better thread title would be, "Is this thing worth selling?"

I wonder what would happen if you asked the same question over in BG. Most of us in here already have basses.

Probably hear a lot of, "Dude, that thing is sick".

If you can't generate any interest, it's always great to have a "spare" bass that you don't need to worry about, and at 3-400 bucks, it seems like you've got one. Always great to have a bass that you can leave at rehearsal, or a dive bar, or your kid's school.
Peace.

I think Marcus has it right...you could probably sell it to a bass guitar player rather than a bass player. I can't imagine anyone who normally plays the double bass would be interested in a thinline bass, but this is just my opinion.

If you could afford to keep it, It might be worth it for situations where you need the amplified volume, which is a huge issue for larger instruments. ( ) Also, if you want to have a quieter instrument for practice, it might be worth it. These seem to be major issues for fully acoustic uprights, at least from what I've seen on the forum here and in my own year of playing.

Unless, of course, it still gives you feedback problems even though it's designed to be plugged in. . .

Thinking about it now, the thing I would like it for is maybe a practice instrument for late at night. I'd have to figure out how to isolate it from the floor. Stuffing the F-holes should be pretty effective since the body is so thin.

I would say that that bass is probably better than most EUBs for that purpose IMO. The body has the right width so you don't need any funky armrests, and a good weight so it doesn't torque on you like an EUB would every time you pluck a string. You get a real neck joint as a point of reference for thumb position. Etc. etc.

For the purposes I'm talking about only something like an Alter-Ego or Yamaha Silent bass would be better - since is they mock body parts that are more realistic than the average EUB.

Could I ask you to stuff the f-holes with a towel or two and see how loud the bass gets?

I suppose if you were serious about it, you could fill it with spray foam.
