Question Are there any Vienna adapters out there

Hi,

I'm interested in the great names of 'Vienna' luthiers. My own bass is estimated around 1840 , but anonymous. Adding some pictures So, please shoot.

Lightbulb 1840?

Are you sure? When did you buy this and from where. I would like to see better pics and closeups of all sides and areas of the Bas as well as the scroll, all sides and angles.. Close up and clear.

This looks like a modern Hungarian Viennese model. Antiqued and shaded. The Varnish is all wrong for an old Bass as far as I can see. maybe better pics will help.

I have a book of just German and Viennese makers that is out of print for decades. I just bought it used. I have other books as well but this will not help one bit. First off, there are no pictures of Basses in there and second, this looks like a recently made bass.

I don't know, Ken. The upper back looks like lotsa cracks and repairs. From what I can see of the scroll, it is of the Viennese style.

Yes, the Scroll is Vieneese style. I have seen several modern Basses from Hungary made in this style as well as other styles like Italian and German as well as English. I have now in my office a huge 5-string with an Italian label. That Bass plus my converted 5er have the same hard type lacquer/urethane type finish which this seems to have.

Cracks mean nothing on these antiqued Basses. They can even fool some of the experts but not all of them.

I want to see this Bass in a better light. Then I will confirm my opinion.

I am curious when he bought it and what he paid for it as well.

I noticed that you are selling the bass on another website, either for sale purposes or for simple "which bass do i own" questions, you should post more detailed pictures. Im with Ken on this one, it looks like an hungarian modern bass, for the people who never saw one of these , these guys are professionals in making the basses look old, blemishes on the varnish, cracks, etc. I even saw a couple where the scroll was actually old and the rest of the bass new. usually if you take a closer look you can see that some cracks are in places where usually basses dont crack, same with the varnish. i've seen quite a few lately and some of them sounded quite good, its a shame the makers dont put their real name inside instead of trying to rip off people.

definitly

Yes,

I'm sure!! I've bought this bass in 1991 by dutch luthier Rene Zaal, who's is well known here on the continent for his 5 string basses. These are used troughout Europe in many famous orchesta's. This bass was an trade-in on one of his deals. Had it valued and reviewed by another luthier back then.
The back is probably not original and taken from a smaller bass, that's why the cross.
I can get a objective accredition if needed.

For the 'fake' warning; I'm fully aware for I own another bass with the same scroll and viola body, tuners aged in battery acid, black painted tailpiece , brand new on the inside, aged on the outside etc. . Still working on some sound improvement measures on that one. But that's another bass, another story, another time.

Oh and I'll post some detailed photo's soon, scroll, side, repairs.

But eh, please moderate your kind assumptions, it's always tricky to judge by photo's/distance.
